A Brief History of the Carson City Senior Citizens Center


The Carson City Kiwanis Club, in response to their International theme, "Enrich the Lives of Those in the Golden Years," secured the first two buildings and had them moved onto the city property.  A great deal of community involvement resulted in remodeling and furnishing of the building.  Many local businesses contributed time, services, equipment, materials, and money.

July 1, 1974

Kiwanis sponsored the first federal grant for the senior center.

October 1975

First Kiwanis-sponsored nutrition program.

August 27, 1976

Carson City Senior Citizens Center, Inc. was formed as a non-profit corporation of active Kiwanians and other community leaders to sponsor senior programs.


Program growth required an addition to the existing facility.  Expansion was once again accomplished with community support from service clubs and businesses.


Recreation hall added.


The kitchen and storage/workroom added.  Senior Transportation Program transferred to the Senior Center.  Carson City Rotary sponsored two vehicles. Citizens supported a tax override for construction and operation of a new senior center, effective 85/86 fiscal year.


Preliminary planning for the new Senior Center design and funding of the new building, including restructuring design to accommodate available funding.

July 1990

The Grand Opening of new senior center (14,000 sq. ft.).

January 1991

The Grand Opening of the remodeled original center, which is used as a Thrift and Gift Shop, as well as for programs.


Planning for expansion of existing center.

February 2003

Expansion started - kitchen floor replaced.

August 2003

Construction start of new senior center building east of existing senior center and remodel/expansion of existing building.

April 2004

Applied for income tax credits in partnership with Community Development, Inc. for affordable senior housing. 

May 2004

Notified by the State of NV Housing Division that we were awarded tax credits for the affordable senior housing project.

June 30, 2004    

Construction complete on new/remodeled/expanded senior center.

July 1, 2004

Grand Opening of new/remodeled/expanded senior center (total sq. ft. = 33,000.)


Construction of Autumn Village I, 48 affordable senior housing apartments started.

January 3, 2006

Share the Day Adult Day Center opened.


Autumn Village I opens - affordable senior apartments.


Autumn Village II started - 42 affordable senior apartments.

October 15, 2007

Autumn Village II opened.


Sierra Ridge Senior Apartments tax credits awarded


Sierra Ridge Senior Apartments ground breaking - June 2nd

Sierra Ridge Senior Apartments construction started - 42 affordable units

Application for Christina Court Apartments started - 42 affordable units
